No matter what infection source enters the hive, bees respond immediately by coating it with propolis. Thanks to its composition, propolis actively combats bacteria, germs, viruses, fungi, and microorganisms. Propolis is made from resins collected by bees from budding trees and flowers, processed with wax.

A powerful natural ally

When you think of bees, honey probably comes to mind first. However, bees produce other amazing substances as well, including propolis. This unique resin mixture has many uses for bees, primarily as a defense against external threats and maintaining hive cleanliness. Bee hives are so clean, they are often compared to an operating room!

We carefully harvest propolis from bees and use it in our cosmetic and other products.

Composition of propolis

Propolis is a rich mixture of bioactive compounds, resins, essential oils, and pollen collected by bees from trees and plants. It has a pleasant aromatic scent. Its color changes with age – older propolis is dark brown, while younger propolis is greenish-yellow. Every batch is slightly different, as bees do not measure ingredients in laboratories.

Approximately 50% of propolis consists of resins, about 30% is beeswax, and around 10% are balsams and essential oils.

How bees use propolis

The name "propolis" comes from Greek: "pro" (before) and "polis" (city), as bees protect their hive with it from unwanted intruders, mold, viruses, and bacteria. They coat hive walls and seal cracks with propolis, often referred to as bee glue. If a larger animal, like a mouse, gets inside and cannot be removed, bees cover it with a thick layer of propolis to prevent decomposition.
